What Are CDFIs?

Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) are mission-driven lenders that expand economic opportunity in communities historically underserved by traditional finance.

Not all financial service providers are CDFIs. CDFIs are certified by the CDFI Fund which is part of the U.S. Treasury. CDFIs can be loan funds, credit unions, banks, or venture capital providers.

Each CDFI is unique with its own areas of focus. Many CDFIs lend or advise small businesses, others support homebuyers, and some CDFIs finance real estate development or clean energy projects. More than 1,000 certified CDFIs operate nationwide, helping revitalize neighborhoods and strengthen local economies.

We are:

A group of Community Development Financial Institutions that lend and provide services across Florida. Together, we are committed to uplifting communities and providing access to fair, responsible financial services. We work to expand access to capital and foster economic opportunity for everyone.

We serve:

  • Community Developers
  • Families and Individuals
  • Community and Nonprofit Organizations
  • Small Businesses

History of CDFIs:

The CDFI story begins in the late 19th century with minority-owned banks serving communities excluded from mainstream finance. Credit unions grew in the 1930s–40s, CDCs in the 1960s–70s, and nonprofit loan funds in the 1980s—all focused on expanding access to capital. In 1994, Congress created the CDFI Fund to support these mission-driven lenders. Today, the industry has evolved into a strong national network driving community development and economic revitalization.
